Etihad Rail Project

Etihad Rail is the UAE's national railway network, designed to connect all seven emirates and link the UAE with the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The project aims to provide an efficient and safe transportation system for both freight and passengers.

Launched in 2009, the network spans over 900km and will significantly reduce road congestion, carbon emissions, and heavy truck traffic across the country. Here's the latest on the project

  • Rail Freight Services (fully operational)

  • Rail Passenger Services (under development):

    • Linking 11 cities and regions within the UAE from Al Sila to Fujairah.

    • Transporting more passengers more quickly and safely throughout the UAE.

Sharjah plays an important role in the Etihad Rail network, acting as a central transit hub between the northern emirates and the rest of the UAE.

Sharjah's involvement include:

  • Integration with major logistics hubs, such as the Sharjah Inland Container Depot (SICD) and industrial areas

  • Connectivity with neighboring emirates like Dubai, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah, improving freight and commuter mobility

  • Enhancing accessibility to Sharjah International Airport and seaports for cargo movement

For Sharjah residents, the Etihad Rail will eventually provide faster and more eco-friendly transportation options, improve commute times between emirates, and reduce reliance on personal vehicles.

The temporary road closures in Sharjah for Etihad Rail construction reflect the emirate's active participation in this transformative national infrastructure project.
